Pro forma is literally translated into "as a matter of form." In business, a pro forma document is provided before an actual transaction takes place. For example, the company’s projected balance sheet and income statement based on analysis and assumptions would be a pro forma document. Another example of a pro forma document would be the projected financial statements of a start up company.
When a company is in the process of preparing a business plan, the founders may draw up projected financial documents that include projected cashflows and income statements. This gives them more ammunition when presenting their business plan to potential investors.
