Market maker is an institution that makes a firm bid and ask price in a given over the counter security by standing ready, willing, and able to buy or sell at publicly quoted prices. There are market makers at the New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq. Nasdaq employs several market makers.
