Search for Small Business Loan Sources

Small businesses, especially in the fledgling days, always seem to be in search of new funding sources. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone out there would just donate free money to your business efforts? Well, for businesses in select industries that actually may be a possibility in the form of federal, state or private grants.

Grants are money awarded to businesses for their contribution to a specific public policy or organizational goal. While grants sound exciting, the truth is that they are far and few between and can require a lot of work to acquire. They are very rarely awarded to businesses or startups, more often to established small businesses that have made definable progress. That being said, there are some grants available from the government, especially companies involved in health-related research and energy-saving projects.

The first place to start if you are interested in grant money is with your state government. Each state (and most cities) will have its own economic development department that may offer grants to certain small businesses. You can check ecodevdirectory.com for a listing of all the resources for your state.

If you think your business may attract the attention of the federal government, you can try one of the following websites: Grants.gov, FederalGrants.com and SBIR.gov. Grants.gov lists federal grants available by both specific regions of the country as well as breaking opportunities down into 23 separate categories like “arts,” “housing” and “consumer protection.”

FederalGrants.com lists all the federal agencies that offer grants. It also posts grants available to single mothers, minorities and women. SBIR.gov is the site for the U.S. government’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and its Small Business Technology Transfer (SBBR) program. Here you will find grants specific to companies in high-tech research and development.

As you search for grant money for your small business financing needs, just remember it will likely take a significant amount of digging and legwork to find the right opportunities, but if you can find one, a grant can be a great fiscal shot in the arm for your growing company.
