With the effects of global warming being felt all around us, it is no surprise that many businesses are turning to more environmentally-friendly practices and creating greener products for their customers. What may surprise you, however, is that going green can actually increase your business’ bottom line significantly.

A recent survey found that 62 percent of business owners now offer green products or services in part because it is viewed as a “competitive requirement” in their field. Of those entrepreneurs, 80 percent said they have seen an increase in sales of their green products and services. A majority of survey respondents experienced an increase in demand for those offerings even during the economic downturn between 2008 and 2010. And it’s not just businesses that sell eco-friendly products or services that are seeing the financial effects of the green movement. There is a fast-growing group of consumers who will patronize businesses that utilize sustainable practices.

So how can your business capitalize on the green trend and simultaneously improve the environment? Start by searching the Department of Energy’s database of available tax credits for energy saving changes. Every state offers many different programs that include things like rebates or tax credits for installing more efficient lighting systems, heating pumps, or solar panels or fuel cells. Not only will your business save money with the tax credits, but you will likely see revenue increase as eco-minded clientele will be attracted to your firm as you advertise your commitment to the environment.

Promoting your earth-consciousness is one of the keys to cashing in on the green market. There are plenty of organizations today that will certify businesses as “green” or “energy saving” based on their modifications. The government’s Energy Star program for small businesses allows firms to use its promotional mark when they have committed to improving energy efficient.

Even starting with small changes in your practices can lead to higher profits and a larger client base for your business in today’s green-trending market.
